Food and gatherings
by the Varanger fjord

Anno 1860 is a historic house in Andersby just outside Vadsø. We rent out the venue for parties and meetings, host food experiences in the house and deliver catering across Varanger.

A house with history, a kitchen with Varanger on the menu

The schoolhouse was built in Kiby in 1825 and moved here to Andersby in 1930. Today it is a place for long meals, celebrations with family and friends, and meetings that need calm and good food. We cook everything ourselves, with fish, reindeer, berries and herbs from Varanger whenever the season allows.

The story

The school that became a gathering place

The schoolhouse was built in Kiby in 1825 and moved log by log to Andersby in 1930. The village children went to school here until 1948; afterwards the house was a teacher’s home and a gathering place with Christmas parties. The old photograph from Vadsø museum shows the schoolyard as it was – our logo is drawn from this very house.

When Stig Arvola bought the house in 2019, it stood with rotten sills, loose cladding and windows that had to be made anew. By 2022 the house had been lifted, re-timbered where needed, clad and restored – room by room, with respect for what was there. Today the classroom is a place for celebrations, meals and meetings, and the food comes from Stig’s own kitchen, Arvola Arctic Chef.
